Canter Basics
This is our only lecture using the Simulator (the rest are from our indoor arenas). Here we will strip down canter to it's basic components. Improve how you stay focussed and breathing well. Look at what it takes to stabilize yourself in canter. The basics of canter transitions. who is taking who and what happens when the horse breaks out of canter.SESSION 2 - May 14th 2pm GMT
Stability in Canter & Changing The Quality of Canter
Live from our indoor arena with different riders and horses. How much extraneous movement do you have in canter? How to plug in with your seat. How to match the up and down forces like bouncing a ball. Learn to understand the shape of your horse's back. A way in for riders to understand and begin to feel collection. What is swinging through the back?SESSION 3 - Jun 4th 2pm GMT
Functional Anatomy, Sitting Well & Counter Canter
The functional anatomy of a good canter. How to get your whole seat glued to the saddle! Assymetry, Pulling on the inside rein. Dealing with quarters-in, and building balance in canter though counter-canter.SESSION 4 - July 16th 2pm GMT
Collecting Canter
Skills in sitting and how to effect the horse's back. How well do the 3rds of the horse fit together. Does the horse have enough stuffing ( tone ) in the right places. Using the idea of the chest place to help visualise and diagnose how the horse loses balance. How to avoid collected canter disintegrating to 4-time.SESSION 5 - August 20th 2pm GMT
Flying Changes
What are the training requirements before attempting flying changes. What must your horse already be able to do? Timing, Courage and Brainspace. How much do you move, how your asymmetry issues can get you again. Different exercises and geometry work to help your horse 'get it'. Different ways in which the change can go wrong.SESSION 6 - 17th September 2pm GMT
Shoulder-in, Half-Pass and Pirouettes
Positioning, Quarters trailing, Issues of bend. The skill of drawing rather than kick/send. Understanding how groundwork can improve your ability to position your horse. 1/4 pirouettes in a box. Mary Wanless is an internationally renowned coach, and is the author of the Ride With Your Mind books.
She coaches riders at all levels, from relative novices to two of the top 12 US dressage riders, and some of the Canadian Eventing Squad.
She has B.Sc. Degrees in both Physics and Applied Sports Coaching, and holds the BHSI certificate.
DID YOU KNOW THAT MARY:
Rode with the late Nuno Oliveira, and over the years she has spent many months training in Portugal. Mary has ridden in Germany with the late Egon Von Neindorff and has trained in Germany with Hans Heinrich Meyer-Zu-Strohen.
