THE BIGGEST MISTAKE

If you have been trained that you need to use the rein to keep the horses head down, and that it is more than 20% of your focus when riding, you are barking up the entirely wrong tree and have your focus in the wrong place. I know this from experience, I spent many years doing and thinking exactly this!

DEVELOPING SUPPLENESS

Suppleness comes in two components. The lateral flexion of the horse, its ability to follow the curve of a circle with appropriate neck bend, is the first component. The second component is longitudinal flexion which is the stretch across the top line, over its back and down the back of its hind legs. In this post we will talk about lateral flexion.

GUNNING ACROSS THE DIAGONAL

In an attempt to teach lengthened strides I see a lot of riders gunning their horses across the diagonal in the hope of getting medium trot or lengthened strides. Whilst it is true that some horses may offer up lengthened strides using that technique, it works in too few cases.
