Whilst giving with the hand can produce some very good results when done correctly it is still a little bit of a sticky plaster. Usually there are other rider/horse interaction issues which could be addressed to help resolve the issue of pulling or leaning. Groundwork is one way you could solve the problem and another is rider biomechanics work. In terms of a simple quick temporary fix, it can work very well.
